Bonjour!
Library - Bibliotheque and Bibliobus exchange this Thursday. Strike day Wednesday - The Ontario Secondary School Teacher Federation (OSSTF) plans to hold a 1-day strike tomorrow. As our school has many staff that are members of this union (office staff, educational assistants and early childhood educators, we are forced to shut down to students tomorrow. There was a note that went home yesterday with students to provide further information. Homework - As students are away tomorrow, I will be sending them home with a homework page practicing what we have been working on so far this week in math. We are working on Area (l'aire) and Perimeter (le perimetre). Students are encouraged to work on this at home tomorrow. See example below. When finding the area, students are allowed to simply count the squares on the inside of the shape, they do not have to know the multiplication strategy yet. You are welcome to email me if you have questions about the homework. Field Trip - We are supposed to have a field trip to the River Run Center next Tuesday. As of right now, with the current strike of our union, we will not be able to attend this field trip. Scholastics - Scholastic orders are due Friday by 9AM. Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable holiday! The students have come back and entered back into their old routines very well over the last couple of days. Below are a few notes to get us started for 2020: Library - This Thursday. French Reading assessments - I have begun 1-on-1 reading assessments with the students to determine their French reading level. Knowing the students' reading level helps me to provide them with appropriate resources in class to ensure they are being challenged enough to move forward in their reading abilities, but also be confident enough to read mostly independently. This is also reflective of the Bibliobus books that they are bringing home to read each week. With the students, I focus on their growth in reading ability as well as their confidence as they move through the levels. You will receive your child's updated reading level by the end of January. River Run Field Trip - We will be walking to the River Run Center on Tuesday January 21st to see Al Simmon - The Science of Music. The permission forms were sent home yesterday. Thank you to the parents who have already checked the "yes" for volunteering box, I will be in touch with you! As we have limited seats for the River Run show, we are only allowed a few volunteers, so I will not be able to accept any other volunteers for this trip. Pizza and Milk - Keep an eye out for Pizza and Milk orders and information coming home soon for Term 2. PD Day - Friday January 31st. Winter Concert - We present next Tuesday! Parents are welcome to attend. The concert will begin shortly after 11am and run for about an hour. Please sit at the back of the gym. The chairs along the sides of the gym are for teachers supervising their classes. For the concert, students will be asked to wear all black and bring sunglasses as a prop for our presentation.
Math Test - The marked addition and subtraction test will come home on Thursday along with an end of unit evaluation. Please sign and return the little slip at the bottom of the page to confirm that you have seen it. We will begin our measurement unit tomorrow! Snowman Run - Students should begin bringing in a labelled mug this week for the Snowman Run next Wednesday if they would like to have hot chocolate after the run. Volunteers are still welcome to join if they would like. Contact [email protected] if interested. Bibliotheque et Bibliobus - This Thursday. Scholastics - If your family would like to order from Scholastics before the winter holiday, please place orders online before the end of the school day on Thursday. If you would like to keep it a surprise as a Christmas gift, just send me an email ([email protected]) to let me know and we can figure that out. Food Drive - Please see picture below for items in need for our holiday food drive if you would like to send something in. Merci! School Closure - Tomorrow is a potential one-day walkout for all OSSTF members. As this withdrawal of services impacts our school, it is likely that the school will be closed tomorrow. Visit UGDSB Labour website to receive updates for tomorrow. Students received a yellow page today with more information.
Addition and Subtraction Test - Students will have an addition and subtraction test this Thursday. They received a practice sheet to help them study at home for the upcoming test. Splash Math - Code for December WKWUSZ Napkins and Glass jars - Thank you to all families who have sent in glass jars or holiday napkins so far! We are continuing to collect these until next Wednesday for an art project. Library and Bibliobus - This Thursday. Holiday Concert - We will be presenting on Tuesday December 17th. The assembly will start shortly after 11:00am and run for about an hour. Snowman Run - The Snowman run is a whole school activity that the students participate in on Wednesday December 18th from 1:30-3pm. They run the course by the river and after the race, students get to enjoy hot chocolate. They must bring their own labelled mug for this activity! If you are interested in volunteering with this Snowman Run, to serve hot chocolate or supervise the run, please email Mme Beaton at [email protected] Parent-Teacher Interviews - Thank you to the many parents who have signed up for Parent-Teacher Interviews this Thursday or Friday. If you have not yet signed up, there is still time to do so. If the times provided do not work for you, please let me know and we can find another time if you'd like. Here is the link: https://webapp.ugdsb.on.ca/pti
Library and Bibliobus tomorrow - please help remind your child to return library books and bibliobus books. If students do not return their bibliobus books for over a month, they will be asked to pay a $5 lost book fee. Pyjama Day - This Thursday! This is a school wide PJ day thanks to all of the students who raised money for our Halloween Dance-a-Thon. Winter Concert - Our class will be presenting a winter song at the Holiday Concert on Tuesday December 17th at 11AM if you'd like to watch! We have begun practicing our song "Le pingouin du pole nord" and students are welcome to practice at home as well. Just an FYI - because our school is so large, our Winter Concert is spread out over 3 days (the 17th, 18th and 19th) so a sibling may be presenting a different day. Glass Jar - We are collecting glass jars for an art project in December. We are looking for larger ones if possible, such as a pickle jar or beet jar. If you are able to send any in during the next few weeks, that would be greatly appreciated. If you can send them wrapped in a towel to prevent them from breaking in backpacks that would be best! PD DAY - This Friday, no school for students. Library and Bibliobus book exchange tomorrow.
CCAT - CCAT results went home yesterday in white envelopes. Please take the time to review them along with the additional information. I am happy to answer questions about CCAT at interviews next week if you have any. If you want more detailed information about CCAT, please contact the Psychology Department (contact information enclosed in envelope). Report Cards - Report Cards will be sent home tomorrow. There will be 2 copies: sign and return one copy in the brown envelope and keep the second copy for your records. Parent Teacher Interviews - It would be great to see all parents for a 15 minute interview next Thursday or Friday. Information about how to sign up will be included with the report card. If there is not a time that works for you, please send me an email and we can set up an alternate time. Au Revoir Mme Campbell - We have had Mme Campbell with us every Tuesday and Thursday since the beginning of September. She is a student from the University of Guelph and she has been a wonderful help in our class! Next Thursday will be her last day with us so we will say our goodbyes! PA DAY - Next Friday, no school for students (Parent-Teacher Interviews during the day). Movie Day - Students have been working very hard for weeks to earn 300 Billets de Bravo for good behaviour, helping each other and doing their work. They have earned a movie this Friday afternoon. They have also earned the option of wearing PJs on Friday and to bring one small stuffed animal or blanket for the movie. The stuffed animal should be smaller than their arm.
Picture Retakes- Friday is also Picture Retake day, so if you would like your child to have picture retakes, you may want to send your child in their picture day clothes and they can change into their PJs once the picture is taken. Progress Reports - Progress Reports will be coming home next Wednesday. Please return the signed report card and envelope to school (unsealed). Parent Teacher Interviews - Parent-Teacher Interviews are scheduled for the evening of Thursday November 28th (evening) and Friday November 29th (all day). There will be more information included with the Progress Report on how to sign up for an interview time online. Math and Learning Skills - Last week, an End of Unit Evaluation went home for our patterning unit in math as well as a Learning Skills self assessment. Both of these had components to fill out and return. If you have not already done so, please complete and return no later than this Friday. Scholastics - Scholastics orders due Friday, preferably online. This week is Treaties Recognition Week - On Friday, we will be creating our own Land Acknowledgements to recognizes the unique and enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous Peoples and their traditional land.
Science - Wow! The Science presentations have been fantastic so far! I look forward to seeing the presentations over the next 2 days as well. A big thank you to parents for being so helpful and involved in this project. As we wrap up our unit on Plants and Soils, we will be having a test next Tuesday. Some items to review with your child for the science test are:
Math - We are finished our patterning unit and will be moving onto addition and subtraction. Please look for an end of unit evaluation coming home next week for patterning. We are starting our addition and subtraction unit tomorrow. Library - We have Library Book and Bibliobus Book exchange tomorrow. Please help remind your child to bring these books to school. Bibliobus books should be read a few times each week at home. Remembrance Day Ceremony - We will have our Remembrance Day Ceremony next Monday at the John McCrae House down the street. Parents are welcome to join, it will begin at 11am. After about half an hour at the JMC House, we will walk back and finish the ceremony in the gym. Please ensure your children are DRESSED AS WARMLY AS POSSIBLE, as it gets very cold standing outside for that time. MERCI! Halloween- Halloween is quickly approaching! For the day of Halloween, students are allowed to wear costumes but please nothing too scary and no weapons. Save masks and special props for Halloween night as these are distracting and tend to get lost or broken when brought to school! We will be participating in the Dance-a-thon on Halloween as well! If your family has collected any donations for the Dance-a-thon, thank you very much and please send them in on Thursday. We will not be having a Halloween party with treats so please do not send in any candy on Halloween. This is mostly because our day is fun of full activities anyways and students will be bringing in food next week for their science project (see last week's post for more information if you missed this). English - Students received their English spelling test yesterday from Mme Wallace. Please practice words that they struggled with at-home. Food Sensitivities - If your child has any food allergies or sensitivities that the school is not already aware of that you would like me to be aware of for next week's potluck, please let me know before next week. PD Day - No school this Friday for students. |
