Teacher Strike - Teachers across the Upper Grand District School Board will be striking tomorrow, Tuesday Jan 28th, and schools will be closed to students and teachers. I understand this can be very difficult for parents and families. We are fighting for better supports in our schools and in our classrooms for the many children with diverse and unique needs. We are fighting to keep class sizes small to ensure each child receives the time with the teacher that they require to understand the material we are teaching. We will return to school on Wednesday.
Reading Assessment - As report cards will not be coming home this term, I am trying to send home many different types of assessment to keep you informed about how your child is doing. Last week, students brought home a page that included their new French reading level, what they are doing well in their reading and their next steps. If you did not receive this, it should be in the front pouch of your child's agenda. Math Assessment - Students will also bring home their Measurement Test along with their mark and unit evaluation today to keep you informed of their marks in math. We are moving into our Data Management unit now. Community Project - Students will be working on their community project throughout the week this week and will be presenting their community to the class next week. Movie Night - Parent council is putting on a Movie Night this Thursday if you would like to attend. See picture below for more info. Library - Bibliotheque and bibliobus this Thursday. PD day - This Friday.

Math test tomorrow - Students will complete a math test tomorrow as we finish up our Measurement Unit. Students will be asked to:
- Choose the most appropriate measurement to measure a variety of objects. For example: to measure a pencil, should you measure in cm, m or km? - Use a ruler to measure the length of objects or lines - Use a ruler to draw a line with a specific measurement (e.g. draw a line that is 25cm long) - Convert measurements from m to cm or m to km (e.g 300m =____cm) - Organise measurements from smallest to largest (e.g. Put these measurements from smallest to largest: 325cm, 3m, 120cm, 1km) - Draw and find the area and perimeter of forms Social Studies Project - Students will be introduced to a social project tomorrow where they will be creating their own rural community based on an industry of their choice (e.g. mining, forestry, fishing, etc.). This project will be completed and constructed in class. Students will be asked to bring in materials to help them build their 3D community. Click HERE to view the assignment online. Students will also receive a hard copy. Strike - As of right now, schools in our board will not be closed to students this week. However, we will not be going to the River Run Center tomorrow. Library - Bibliotheque et bibliobus this Thursday. Movie Night - There will be a movie night the evening of next Thursday (January 30th) put on by Parent Council. PD day - PD day next Friday, January 31st. Bonjour!
Library - Bibliotheque and Bibliobus exchange this Thursday. Strike day Wednesday - The Ontario Secondary School Teacher Federation (OSSTF) plans to hold a 1-day strike tomorrow. As our school has many staff that are members of this union (office staff, educational assistants and early childhood educators, we are forced to shut down to students tomorrow. There was a note that went home yesterday with students to provide further information. Homework - As students are away tomorrow, I will be sending them home with a homework page practicing what we have been working on so far this week in math. We are working on Area (l'aire) and Perimeter (le perimetre). Students are encouraged to work on this at home tomorrow. See example below. When finding the area, students are allowed to simply count the squares on the inside of the shape, they do not have to know the multiplication strategy yet. You are welcome to email me if you have questions about the homework. Field Trip - We are supposed to have a field trip to the River Run Center next Tuesday. As of right now, with the current strike of our union, we will not be able to attend this field trip. Scholastics - Scholastic orders are due Friday by 9AM. Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable holiday! The students have come back and entered back into their old routines very well over the last couple of days. Below are a few notes to get us started for 2020: Library - This Thursday. French Reading assessments - I have begun 1-on-1 reading assessments with the students to determine their French reading level. Knowing the students' reading level helps me to provide them with appropriate resources in class to ensure they are being challenged enough to move forward in their reading abilities, but also be confident enough to read mostly independently. This is also reflective of the Bibliobus books that they are bringing home to read each week. With the students, I focus on their growth in reading ability as well as their confidence as they move through the levels. You will receive your child's updated reading level by the end of January. River Run Field Trip - We will be walking to the River Run Center on Tuesday January 21st to see Al Simmon - The Science of Music. The permission forms were sent home yesterday. Thank you to the parents who have already checked the "yes" for volunteering box, I will be in touch with you! As we have limited seats for the River Run show, we are only allowed a few volunteers, so I will not be able to accept any other volunteers for this trip. Pizza and Milk - Keep an eye out for Pizza and Milk orders and information coming home soon for Term 2. PD Day - Friday January 31st. |
