Parents: I hope you and your family are doing well at home. A few ideas if you’re child is looking for something to do:
Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or are looking for guidance. All the best, Mme Elias
With the recent news of a two week school closure, students have received a work package to work on at-home. Students have received math worksheets to practice Multiplication and Division as this is the unit we are supposed to start after the March Break and will continue once they return. Students will also receive some French Reading and Writing activities as well as a Science booklet on Forces. Students are encouraged to continue to read in English and French throughout the two weeks at home and are encouraged to access Lalilo.com on an ipad or computer (school code: MQRARC). If you have any questions about the homework, I will be available from March 23rd-April 3rd via email to answer any questions at [email protected]. Google Translate can usually give you an idea of instructions if the French vocabulary is too difficult. Students are encouraged to complete as much as possible, but I understand under these circumstances, everyone's situation will be different. The resources sent home are to help students continue learning from home and make the transition back to school easier once they return. The homework will not be marked as an evaluation. If your child was absent on the last day of school, the documents are available to print below.
Rube Goldberg Machine: Students will be constructing their Rube Goldberg Machine at-school on Thursday. Just to clarify, they do not have to complete this project at home, they are just encouraged to practice and experiment with different materials at home so they have some ideas ready when they build at-school on Thursday. They can bring materials from home with parent permission. Lalilo - https://student.lalilo.com/?language=en#/ is a great website for students to practice French. They have learned how to use it at school and are encouraged to practice at-home as well. The class code is MQRARC and each student has their own account. Math Test - The money math test will be corrected and sent home later this week once all students are done. There will also be an end of unit evaluation attached to the test. Please view the "Math Test Money Visuals" document below to help with corrections if needed. We have begun our unit on fractions! March Break - Next week! Students are encouraged to read in French and English over the break as well as complete their last mission of Planet Protectors: Go Car Free (due Tuesday March 24th. Billets de Bravo - Students have been working together for quite some time now and as a class have collected 600 "Billets de Bravo!". This is a great achievement! We decided that the prize will be a little "store" where they can purchase small candies or prizes using fake money. The store will be open this Friday afternoon for students to "buy" their prizes. Some students asked if they could bring in an item to donate to the store (e.g. chocolates or candy). They are definitely welcome to but not required to. If you wanted to donate a little something, please make sure it is nut free. Merci beaucoup! Math Test Visuals - these are here so your child can make corrections to their math test at home.
Money Test - Students will complete their test on money on Monday March 9th. Things to practice at home:
Scholastics orders are due tomorrow - online orders only. Due by 9AM. Library - Monday Science Project - Students will be introduced to a science project that we will be completing next week called a Rube Goldberg Machine. See this youtube video for an example of a Rube Goldberg Machine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uDDEEHDf1Y. Students are encouraged to bring materials from home to use for their Rube Goldberg machine and practice making their Rube Goldberg Machine at home. We will be constructing and explaining our Rube Goldberg machine in class on Thursday March 12th. Students will be asked to identify the different forces found in their machine (ex. force of gravity, friction, muscular force, elastic force, magnetic force) Booster Juice orders - due online by Friday March 20th March Break - March 16th-20th Pizza - will be Thursday instead of Friday due to a strike day. Schools will be closed to students this Friday due to a strike from OSSTF.
Scientists in the School - Next Monday, March 2nd. The cost of this is covered by Parent Council! If there is another parent volunteer interested, please send me an email! Data Management Evaluation - Students will be receiving their Data Management Evaluation this week once all students complete their final project. Please keep an eye out for this and send me an email if you have any questions. We are now working on money in math. Students will also be bringing home their math duotang as we are done Term 1 and they will get a new duotang for Term 2. This is to be reviewed at home and can stay at home. Planet Protectors - Students are now on the Shower Power Mission! This is due on Monday March 2nd. Bonjour! I hope everyone enjoyed their Family Day weekend together, especially with the nice weather we had yesterday!
Library - We miss library this week because it is a short week. Library will be on Monday Feb 24th. The way our 5-day rotation falls, we will have library on Mondays until after Easter (for the next 6 school weeks). Scientist in the School - We will have scientists in the school on Monday March 2nd in the morning. Parent Council will be covering the cost of this workshop! I am hoping to have one or two parent volunteers join us to help run this workshop (from 8:30am-11:45am). Please send me an email or a note in the agenda if you would like to help - it is a fun one! Merci! Planet Protectors - Over the next week, students will be participating in a "Planet Protectors" program at school. This will include some activities to complete at home as well! Please ask your child more about this after school! Strike Day - There will be a province wide strike day this Friday Feb 21st for all publicly funded schools. Pizza day will be this Thursday instead of Friday. Library - Friday
Kookies for Koalas - fundraiser this Friday. Cookies cost $1. Suivez la rivière - the whole school will be participating in Suivez la Rivière next week. This is a program learning about the river behind our school and its importance to us. Students will be painting a fish next week to create a large mural. We would greatly appreciate if you could pay $7 online to help cover the costs of the fish painting activity. Some of the money also goes to conservation efforts for the river. Learning Skills Self-Assessment - Students are to reflect on their Learning Skills that were sent home earlier this week. They must set a goal for themselves for Term 2 and return this to school. You will also find attached their Progress Report goal for students to reflect if they did complete their Term 1 goal. Strike next week - As of right now, schools will be closed to students next Monday and Tuesday due to the strike. Valentine's Day - We will have a small Valentine's day party next Friday afternoon. If students decide to bring Valentine cards, they are encouraged to bring a card for each student in the class - we have 17 students in the class. Please no nut products if you would like to send a snack for the party. Teacher Strike - Teachers across the Upper Grand District School Board will be striking tomorrow, Tuesday Jan 28th, and schools will be closed to students and teachers. I understand this can be very difficult for parents and families. We are fighting for better supports in our schools and in our classrooms for the many children with diverse and unique needs. We are fighting to keep class sizes small to ensure each child receives the time with the teacher that they require to understand the material we are teaching. We will return to school on Wednesday.
Reading Assessment - As report cards will not be coming home this term, I am trying to send home many different types of assessment to keep you informed about how your child is doing. Last week, students brought home a page that included their new French reading level, what they are doing well in their reading and their next steps. If you did not receive this, it should be in the front pouch of your child's agenda. Math Assessment - Students will also bring home their Measurement Test along with their mark and unit evaluation today to keep you informed of their marks in math. We are moving into our Data Management unit now. Community Project - Students will be working on their community project throughout the week this week and will be presenting their community to the class next week. Movie Night - Parent council is putting on a Movie Night this Thursday if you would like to attend. See picture below for more info. Library - Bibliotheque and bibliobus this Thursday. PD day - This Friday. |
